History of Mary’s Hardware Bar
Not only is Mary’s Hardware Bar located in the heart of the capital city but it sits where the historical Wicklow Hotel once was. This hotel was the regular meeting place for Irish figures such as Michael Collins during the War of Independence Ireland (1919-1921). Michael Collins was a politician, soldier and Irish revolutionary leader at this time. He was a key figure in gaining the 26 counties of the Republic of Ireland formed, with just 6 counties left under British rule in Northern Ireland. The head porter of the Wicklow Hotel, Doran, was shot dead in 1921. Witnesses claimed that Collins and his men were behind the death of Doran as they were informed that he was working as a spy for the British. He provided information to the Deputy Chief of British Intelligence in Ireland, Colonel Hill Dillon. Another shooting took place in 1920 involving a spy who was also working for Colonel Hill Dillon.
