Dublin Whiskey Shops
To a whiskey fan, whiskey shops are just big toy shops. Even to non-whiskey fans, whiskey shops still maintain a certain appeal. These specialists seem to lure passersby with their golden contents and incredible variety. Whenever we here at The Whiskey Trail drop in to one of our favourite specialists, we’re reminded of the incredibly daunting amount of whiskey we have yet to taste. We seem to discover a new brand with each visit! In this “Renaissance of Irish whiskey”, a plethora of whiskey shops now exist in Dublin, mirroring this upswing in the industry. Here are a few of our favourites.

L. Mulligan Whiskey Shop
Nestled in Dublin’s Creative Quarters, L. Mulligan Whiskey Shop opened in 2016 making it newest specialist in the city. With an open design, you can see every bottle on offer as soon as you step in the door. This comes as a very welcoming sight. You won’t be long figuring out where to start as several experts are at hand to talk you through their inventory. This impressive collection includes every version of Midleton Very Rare as far back as 1985 as well as a great selection of Vodkas, Gins, and Rum. Next time you’re passing by, drop in for a drop and chat with the friendly staff as tastings are run every day!

Celtic Whiskey Shop
Probably Ireland’s leading whiskey specialist, the Celtic Whiskey Shop has been operating in the heart of the city since 2003. Boasting Ireland’s most comprehensive collection of international and domestic whiskey, this shop has become a Mecca for whiskey fans all over the world. The shop has received several Icons of Whisky Awards from Whisky Magazine for Best Single Outlet Retailer in 2017, 2016 & 2013. It’s easy to get lost among the bottles on offer but luckily several experts are at hand to guide you through and provide daily tastings. There is also a fabulous collection of world spirits, wine and even craft beer. The Celtic Whiskey Shop is worth planning an excursion into the city in its own right!

Mitchell & Son Wine and Spirit Merchants
The first port of call for many in Dublin when spirit hunting is Mitchell & Son. This is due in part to the 200 years of history these specialists have clocked in the city. Mitchell & Son is undoubtedly a Dublin institution. Now with three locations, acquiring that perfect whiskey has never been so easy. We highly recommend dropping into their Sandycove location, an area steeped in Joycean history, and picking up a bottle of Green Spot, one of its variants, or Yellow Spot. Appropriately, Green Spot was a favourite tipple of a certain Mr Joyce, if you need any more convincing. Mitchell & Son have bonded Green Spot for over 100 years and if you haven’t tried it already, you need to reassess your life and buy a bottle.

Honourable Mention: Dublin Airport’s The Loop
Surprising for many is the comprehensive collection of Irish Whiskey on offer in Dublin Airport. What better souvenir to take away from this island than a bottle of our gift to the world? Typically you can find representatives of various brands offering tastings and talking you through the characteristics of your dram. Also, if you’re flying somewhere outside the EU, you can avail of the duty free prices! But don’t tell the shops listed above that we told you that.
