Writers Tears Red Head
Our love affair with the crafty folks at Walsh Whiskey grows every day. It’s with the release of instant classics like Writers Tears Red Head that usher this affection along. We paid a visit to the Walsh Whiskey Distillery at Royal Oak earlier in 2017, and we encourage you to do the same. Check out our blog on that visit here!
A No-Age-Statement Single Malt whiskey, Writers Tears Red Head is, for our money, the best ‘value against quality’ Irish whiskey currently on sale, perhaps closely followed by Red Head’s sister: Writers Tears Copper Pot. See our thoughts on Copper Pot here. Retailing in most outlets a little under the €50 mark, this whiskey stands shoulder to shoulder against other premium whiskies typically coming in at twice the cost. This was reiterated when Red Head was awarded Gold in the ‘Premium Single Malt’ category in the 2017 Irish Whiskey Masters.
Tasting Notes
Red Head is aged exclusively in Oloroso Sherry casks. This plays a part in the nose, taste, and finish of this tipple without overpowering the whiskey itself. Acquainting yourself with the nose, prepare to meet dried sultanas and red apples blissfully merging with the fresh and lively aroma of tropical fruits. Delve in to discover a smooth full bodied maltiness accompanied with honey, pineapple, and a ginger spice to keep things interesting. An unrushed, elegant dry finish is your reward with hints of citrus fruits at the latter stages of this finish.
Writers Tears Red Head is the ultimate stocking filler this Christmas with its more-than-reasonable price. We couldn’t imagine a better setting to enjoy this dram than with your feet up beside the fire, full to the brim with Christmas dinner, pretending the washing up will sort itself out.
