Lough Gill Distillery, The Home Of Athrú Whiskey
Knocknarea is the second single malt from the Lough Gill Distillery and is also a limited edition of 6,600 bottles. Matured for 11 years in ex bourbon American oak casks and then finished for a minimum of three years in finest Oloroso sherry casks beside Lough Gill. Knocknarea takes its name from the monolithic mountain to the west of Sligo town which is the final resting place of the legendary warrior Queen Maeve.
Lough Gill Distillery is situated in a unique location in Co. Sligo, West of Ireland. An area surrounded by history, folklore and mythology famously captured in the works of WB Yeats. Even the word whiskey is immersed in Gaelic roots, deriving from the term uisce beatha, meaning ‘water of life’. Malt whiskey (made using only malted barley, water and yeast) is one of Europe’s earliest distilled beverages, the first record of Irish malt whiskey dating back to 1405, around 90 years before it was first recorded in Scotland.
The factors that define Irish single malt whiskey include a rich history and reputation, a unique production process, natural elements such as water and climate specific to the individual distillery location, and the passion and commitment of the people who participate in the production process. All these, and more, are found in abundance in at the Lough Gill Distillery, the home of Athrú single malt whiskey.
Irish whiskey led the world’s spirits trade before a perfect storm of politics and prohibition decimated the country’s malt whiskey producers. After a period of decline during the 20th century, Irish Whiskey is now the fastest growing spirit category in the world and rare Irish malt whiskies are regarded as some of the finest single malts in the world.

Athru Knocknarea 14 Year Old Whiskey Tasting Notes:
This Irish Single Malt has been aged for 11 years in American oak casks and finished for 3 in the finest Oloroso sherry casks. Knochnarea is the second expression from Athru and an exceptional single malt
This whiskey opens with a big burst of fresh wood, chocolate orange and rich deeply developed malt undertone. Imagine a chocolate bourbon biscuit with a creamy orange flavoured filling. Dark coco powder, with an edge of bitterness presenting like a mild Italian espresso or maybe java. There is a base note of burnt toffee, sandalwood and some fresh orange citrus that compliments the sent of cedar from the cask.
Knocknarea is bottled at 48% abv and it punches it way on to your palate. There is a depth of flavour here, dark fruits, raisins and prunes soaked in alcohol. But the dark fruits are subdued by more savory flavours of cigar ash, leather and bitter coffee. The sweetness of the fruits has been swallowed up and mellowed by the 14 years in quality wooden casks. The official notes mention “Raisins, Brown Sugar, Mince Pies and Caramel” I can find all of these in this superbly layered Irish Whiskey. Athru Knocknarea whiskey would be perfect with a quality cigar and an Irish cheese board.
The finish is heading towards a medium length finish and then falls away in a lovely peppery dryness. It makes me think of a dusty cigar box, that has held a variety of cigars over the years. It reminds me of my uncle at Christmas. More cracked pepper and an earthiness that fades away over time like a charred bourbon barrel on it’s 3rd or 4th fill, it has a memory of greatness and a depth waiting to be discovered.
